Dave McClellan wants to connect with listeners more than anything. This desire shines forth in his book which helps the preacher in his preparation to connect to the passage and sermon himself.
The goal of this text is for the preacher to internalize the sermon preparation rather than externalize it in the form of a strict outline. Don't get me wrong, both ways work fine. Some congregants appreciate alliterated outlines and the Word moves forth in power that way. Nonetheless, a storied, authentic flow approach works just as well and eases the listener to place themselves in that story flow. And, the Word moves forth in power as well.
I personally believe that both ways ought to be learned and attempted by learners of both camps if only for the sake of the challenge and opportunity to learn a new craft. If the only that comes from that attempt is that you become better at the form you prefer, then congratulations, you've become better at what you do and the results will show through your preparation and delivery.
